Costco run ๐
13 ppl ยท 7 days ยท heavy eaters + coffee. Pad 15โ20% on dry/canned/snacks; DON'T pad greens, produce, bread. Max out ice โ cooler space is zero-sum with ice.
16 lb steak ALREADY BOUGHT โ do not re-buy ribeye / tri-tip
โฆ
Snack Box โ all new, biggest gap
If You Must Buy the Meat (backup โ 3 dinners run on member meat)
Ice โ 225 lb, max it out
Fresh dairy โ read this
- BUY QUARTS, NEVER JUGS. Opened H&H lasts 3-4 days; a 2-gal jug opened Day 1 is sour by Day 5. Eleven quarts opened one at a time stay fresh the whole trip.
- Get ULTRA-PASTEURIZED if you can (Costco's usually is) โ much longer unopened life.
- Split across two coolers: Days 1-4 โ cooler 2 (6 qt H&H, 4 qt milk). Days 5-7 โ cooler 4, SEALED (5 qt H&H, 3 qt milk).
- FREEZE 2 MILK QUARTS SOLID โ they act as block ice in cooler 4, then thaw into Day 6-7 milk. Don't freeze H&H (goes grainy).
- Cost: ~39 lb and 0.6 cu ft of cooler. Bump ice 200 โ 225 lb to compensate.
Coolers & drinks
- 4 coolers, NO drinks cooler: 1 meat/frozen (open only on meal days) ยท 2 dairy (daily) ยท 3 produce Days 1-4 (daily) ยท 4 Days 5-7 โ DO NOT OPEN UNTIL DAY 5.
- Fruit goes in CRATES not coolers.
- Drinks = drag bag + rig. Mesh bag, cans only, no glass. Salmon R is undammed โ 60s-70s in Aug, drinks will be COOL not cold. Check clips after every big rapid.
If Costco is out of it
- Muffaletta โ HIGHEST RISK: tapenade + pepperoncini + Italian dressing.
- Sardines/kippers โ canned salmon ยท babaganoush โ double the hummus ยท bruschetta jars โ fresh tomato, garlic, olive oil, basil.
- Couscous โ quinoa or orzo ยท Bitchin' Sauce โ hummus or ranch ยท Hatch chile โ canned diced green ยท hoagie rolls โ any roll or +1 loaf ยท fresh dill โ dried ยท mandarins โ more apples + grapes.
- 2-packs: buy them, leave the spare in the car (capers, pepperoncini, Italian dressing, mustard, tapenade, hot sauce, jam).
